McDonald’s Biggest Competition: Butternut Squash Fries

March 26, 2010

Alright McD’s it’s time to step up your game, because Hungry Girl’s Bake-Tastic Butternut Squash Fries are on your fast-food tail. Seriously though, have you tried these tasty treats?! These fries do require some work, but the result is absolutely delicious and extremely worth all of your hard effort.

How to Make Butternut Squash Fries in 7 Steps:

1) Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Slice off both ends of the squash.

2) Cut the squash in half and then in half again (see below)

3) Scoop out the seeds and save them to bake later. They taste exactly like fall-inspired pumpkin seeds!

4) With a butcher’s knife, carefully slice off the skin.

5) Cut the squash into yummy fry-form.

6) Bake in the oven for 40 minutes. At 20 minutes, flip the fries so they can bake evenly on both sides.

7) Season with salt, dip them in ketchup and wah-lah! Delicious healthy and home cooked fries.

Believe it or not, no fast food on this island. Well, the base used to have a BK but it closed, and I guess since we have a subway, there is that, but that is not exactly the same thing, although it is fast.

Those fries look great, and way healthier than McDs fries.

I’m pretty sure if opened up your own shop, Mickey D’s would go out of business. These look wonderful!

FABULOUS! I’m NOT a fast food eater, but when I must, I always look for a healthy option like a salad, parfait, baked potato, or soup. Often times it’s hard to truly find healthy alternatives when fast food is all that’s available!

I do not eat fast food–I may snatch a few of my friend’s fries or something, but I just don’t feel it’s worth it! I don’t feel they taste incredible either. I do like some salads they have and Chick-fla is AMAZING!

    Your bnut fries look fabulous!

I haven’t had fast food in the longest time. I USED to get chicken sandwiches though. I remember when I was at the airport a few months ago, I got a parfait from McDonalds. Does that count as fast food? Lol.

Butternut squash is AMAZING no matter how it’s prepared – but was fries, they are the best :)

Yum. I usually do baked sweet potato fries. Need to try with butternut squash though. As a vegetarian, I almost never hit a chain restaurant (especially fast food) as they rarely have anything to offer and I do care about the health factor.
