Wow It’s Early and Wow I’m Hungry

May 27, 2010

So here’s the deali-o. Last Monday I began my first real full-time job.

Fresh out of college, waking up to a screeching alarm clock during the wee hours of the morning  is not always the most pleasant thing to do. For most job newbies, trying to figure out exactly how long you’re going to need to get ready in the morning takes a lot of trial and error. On top of your makeup routine, you also have to calculate in your commute time + the time zoned out half asleep in the shower, which all can be extremely stressful.

With that, here are twelve tips for my fellow early morning risers:

1. Set out your clothes and iron them the night before

2. Set your alarm clock 10 minutes early (In case you’re a “Snoozer” like myself)

3. If you’re in Sales, plug the address in the GPS the night before

4. Have apples and banaynays ready for a quick early morning snack

5. Set 2 alarm clocks– one that is battery operated and one that plugs into the wall

6. If you usually straighten your hair, first put it up in a ponytail and only straighten the “tail” part to save time

7. Get to bed early! If a show like The Bachelorette is on late at night, watch the first half, but save part 2 to watch the next night online

8. Think about the morning commute as a road trip

9. If you do wake up late, PRIORITIZE. What can you do in the car? Makeup, eat breakfast, etc.

10. Remember to breathe. Everybody goes through some version of the hectic early morning routine.–yet somehow, everything always works out.

11. Don’t speed on your way to work. A $200 ticket will only slow you down even more.

12. Coffee & a smile are muy importante once you get to work. ;)

Now onto some of my early morning eats:

If I have time, I’ll whip up a giant Protein Powder Pancake with Maple Syrup.

If I’m running late, McDonald’s Sausage Biscuit is worth every penny ( or $1 bill). Yes, it’s more than a Chicken Nugget addiction when it comes to the glorious McD’s.

Ironing my pants + downing a PB & J Whole Wheat Wrap. Just call me Iron Woman.

Chomping down on Kashi Heart to Heart Warm Cinnamon Oat Cereal is also delish. Is it weird that I’d rather eat cereal straight out of the box than pour milk into it? I think that makes me an official snacker.

That’s all folks! Happy almost TGIF! Memorial Day Weekend, here we come. :)

My job starts at 5:30. I live 25 minutes away. The roads are pretty much dead at this time, so I don’t have any issues or tips, lmao

  2. May 27, 2010 2:46 am

I have yet to enter the real world, but thanks for the tips for when I do!

  3. May 27, 2010 2:48 am

I personally can’t stand scrambled mornings. I set my alarm to wake me up 2.5 hrs. before I have to walk out the door. I’m all about leisurely mornings with my hot oats : )

  4. May 27, 2010 4:19 am

    Yay! Congrats on the job!
I used to work at the warehouse in an electronics store and I had to be there at 5 some mornings! Those were always fun :)

  5. May 27, 2010 10:51 am

Great tips! Love the food pics too. Simple, easy, and healthy (sorry McD’s!) :-)
I also recommend packing your lunch the night before, always saves me a bundle of time.
And if you are a cold coffee drinker, make a bunch of coffee over the weekend, stick it in a glass container from Bed Bath and Beyond, let cool to room temp and put it in the fridge for the week. All you had to do it add your fixins in the morning and you go. No weekday assembly required!
    Congrats on the great job!

    • May 27, 2010 9:31 pm

I’m jealous you’re a morning person! PS I’m so excited to see you at the Healthy Living Summit!

  9. May 27, 2010 4:35 pm

Great looking tips. My tip is if you have a spouse or roomie, combine tasks, particularly if you have animals. The thing that always makes me late is my dog. She will stay out in the fields forever.

  10. May 27, 2010 4:48 pm

although i have yet to try it, overnight oats! i cant sleep in past 8 on ANY day, no matter how hard i try! i am usually up and about by 6, even in the summer! but for sleeping in i used to lay out my clothes and make up or make a reminder list of what really needed to be done in the morning (:

  18. May 28, 2010 1:40 am

These are great tips! I’m in the same boat–What’s your job?

    • May 31, 2010 3:54 pm

Thank you! I’m training to cover Sales Reps territories while they are on vacation. After that, the next step up in the company is a Sales Rep :)

  19. May 28, 2010 12:15 pm

Getting up early gets easier and easier! Love your tips!

  20. May 28, 2010 1:35 pm

It definitely gets easier the longer you have been working. My tips are to pack your lunch and work bag the night before (keys, wallet, gym clothes if necessary), make overnight oats or a frittata for the week, and pick your outfit the night before.

  21. May 28, 2010 6:39 pm

    Great post, Shannon!
It´s good to know you´re already an expert ;)
Wish you a great weekend, love!

PB&J wrap sounds delissshhhh. Great tips!

  25. May 30, 2010 1:03 pm

I HATE getting up early. I do as much as I can the night before. I pack my lunch and wash my hair and everything in the evening… I also eat my breakfast at my desk cause my office is awesome like that!

  26. May 30, 2010 6:41 pm

Loved reading this! I definitely agree about coffee… it’s essential! And the “curved yellow fruit” sign made me laugh. Where did you see that??

  27. May 30, 2010 7:26 pm

i try to set out my clothes the night before and prep my bag too if i have something in the morning. most of the time i don’t, though, so that’s all my tips!

  28. May 30, 2010 8:28 pm

Congrats on finding a job right out of college! thats amazing.

Love the tip about putting your hair in a ponytail first – that must save a ton of time!! trying that asap because I could always use a few extra minutes :)
haha coffee is a must. without it I am not me.

  29. May 30, 2010 11:10 pm

Hey! I was going to see if next Sat or Sun do you want to meet up at the Pinellas Living Green Expo in Clearwater?
    http://pinellaslivinggreenexpo.org/about

I went last year and it was pretty cool. lots of free stuff and samples, and even random classes.

    • May 30, 2010 11:17 pm

By the way, Mirza and I drove over to Caddy’s, but there were soooo many people and no where to park. And some dudes were getting arrested; it was crazy. Plus, it didn’t really seem like my scene, I’m not a bar person (I don’t even drink) haha. oh well.

  30. May 31, 2010 7:00 am

Yes, it was definitely a little insane out there.. the beach was packedddd! Thanks for driving by though :) I don’t blame ya not stopping lol. I’ll check out that Expo online tomorrow. It sounds pretty neat!

  31. November 13, 2010 8:12 pm

I think the number one tip for easing out your mornings is to organize the night before! clothes, makeup, bag, breakfast- have it all ready to go and it makes the morning slump so much easier!
